The Boundary

Basecamp. Ely Minnesota, the last outfitting town before the wilderness. A welcome dinner. Gear is fitted. The map is laid out for the first time. You sleep early.

The Paddle In. Three canoes, six guests, two guides. Eighteen miles of open water, broken by rests on granite shores. The silence is the first thing you notice. You make camp on a wooded point and eat by the fire.

Portage. A half-mile carry through dense pine forest, canoes overhead. It is the hardest stretch. It is also the threshold. The lake on the far side is smaller, deeper, quieter. The map ends here.

Arrival. Deepwater. Unmarked on any chart. You see the cedar structures before you see the shore — three low buildings against the trees, smoke already rising. Boots come off. The guides take the canoes.

Heat, Plunge, Rest, Three days at the site. Heat in the sauna, vihta in hand. Plunge into the lake. Rest on the dock under birch and sky. Meals appear when you are hungry. The forest keeps the time.

The Return. Carried in by canoe. Left as we found it. The portage feels shorter in this direction. A final dinner at basecamp. In the morning you drive home.
